🌋 Furnas: A Journey into the Volcanic Heart of São Miguel

1. Miradouro do Pisão

We begin our day at this stunning clifftop viewpoint near Caloura. Overlooking the quaint fishing village of Água de Pau, it offers a perfect first glimpse of the island’s rugged coastline, where black volcanic basalt meets the deep blue Atlantic.

2. Our Lady of Peace Chapel (Ermida Sra. da Paz)

Perched high above Vila Franca do Campo, this 16th-century chapel is one of the island's most iconic spots.

The Highlight: Climb the grand staircase decorated with blue-and-white tiles to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Vila Franca Islet, a perfectly submerged volcanic crater.

3. Furnas Lake & The "Cozido" Unearthing

We enter the massive volcanic crater of Furnas to witness a culinary spectacle found nowhere else on Earth.

The Ritual: Watch as locals unearth the "Cozido" pots from the steaming ground, where your lunch has been slow-cooking for 6 hours using only natural geothermal heat.
Entry Fee: €3.00 per person (access to the fumaroles area).

4. Traditional Lunch (Cozido das Furnas)

Experience the authentic taste of the volcano. The Cozido is a rich stew of local meats and vegetables, prepared with a unique mineral touch provided by the Earth's steam.

5. Thermal Bath: Ultimate Relaxation

After lunch, unwind in the famous iron-rich hot springs of Furnas (Terra Nostra Park or Poça da Dona Beija).

The Experience: Soak in natural thermal pools surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation with water temperatures reaching 35°C to 39°C.

6. Furnas Village Fumaroles

Take a walk through the heart of the village to see boiling geysers, mineral water fountains, and "mud pots." It is a vivid reminder that the volcano beneath your feet is very much alive.

7. Pico do Ferro Lookout

We drive to the rim of the crater for the most spectacular view of the day. From here, you can see the entire Furnas Lake and the village nestled inside the caldera—a truly humbling perspective of Azorean geology.

8. Gorreana Tea Factory

We end our journey on the North Coast at the oldest tea plantation in Europe.

Wander through the emerald-green tea fields.
Visit the factory to see original 19th-century machinery in action and enjoy a complimentary tasting of their world-class Black or Green tea.
